Clayton Elementary School is located in a rural setting in the northwest corner of Cherokee County. The school opened in 1948 with an initial enrollment of 150 students. Originally the school served students in grades first through eighth. Many renovations were made to the original building through the years. In 1986, the grade configuration of the school became K-6 as the seventh and eighth graders were zoned to the newly constructed Teasley Middle School. A new facility was constructed in 1998 and a new, free-standing gym was also built at that time. Four mobile units were installed in 2009. For the 2010-2011 school year, two additional mobile units were installed because the old building was no longer available for student use. The original facility was demolished in spring of 2013. In 2014, Clayton Elementary School became a K-5 school as the sixth graders were districted to the new Teasley Middle School. The current population of Clayton is approximately 300 students for the 2022-23 school year.
Since first being built, the school has been an integral part of the Clayton Community. Both the community and school work together to provide a challenging and rewarding educational experience for the students. This relationship between the school and community is one of Clayton’s unique characteristics.

From I-575 North, take Exit 20. Turn right and continue on Riverstone Parkway. Turn left onto Fate Conn Road, and then take a slight right onto Heard Drive. Turn left onto Lower Bethany Road. In 2.5 miles turn left onto Land Road. In 1 mile turn left onto Upper Burris Road, and Clayton Elementary will be on your left.
