Clayton Elementary School is nestled in a rural area in the northwest corner of Cherokee County. The school first opened its doors in 1948 with an enrollment of 150 students, serving grades one through eight. Over the years, the original building underwent numerous renovations to accommodate growth and evolving educational needs.
In 1986, the school transitioned to a K–6 configuration when seventh and eighth grade students were rezoned to the newly built Teasley Middle School. A major milestone came in 1998 with the construction of a new school facility, which included a standalone gymnasium.
To address increasing enrollment, four mobile units were added in 2009. Two additional units were added in 2010–2011 as the older building was no longer optimal for student use. The original facility was respectfully retired and demolished in the spring of 2013. In 2014, Clayton Elementary became a K–5 school when sixth grade students were reassigned to the new Teasley Middle School.
Clayton Elementary has long served as a cornerstone of the Clayton community. The strong partnership between the school and its community fosters a supportive environment that promotes both academic challenge and personal growth. This close-knit collaboration remains one of Clayton’s defining strengths.

From I-575 North, take Exit 20. Turn right and continue on Riverstone Parkway. Turn left onto Fate Conn Road, and then take a slight right onto Heard Drive. Turn left onto Lower Bethany Road. In 2.5 miles turn left onto Land Road. In 1 mile turn left onto Upper Burris Road, and Clayton Elementary will be on your left.
